Plot summary
In a shantytown on the outskirts of Rome, Giacinto Mazzatella shares a shack with his wife, his ten children and four generations of relatives crammed in with him. He lost his left eye at work some time ago, and the insurance company paid him a large sum. He keeps that money hidden from the household, spends little of it on himself, and routinely abuses the family verbally and physically. The money is his alone, and he refuses to share it with anyone. The household gets by mainly on thieving, and its members keep trying to get hold of the hoard he guards.
