Plot summary
Spring reaches Borgo San Giuliano, the village near Rimini, with poplar seeds drifting on the wind, and at nightfall the townspeople gather in the square for the fogheraccia, burning an effigy of an old woman. Titta, a mid-teen, sits through tedious school lessons, daydreams about Gradisca, the town beauty, and dodges the details of his longings when he goes to confession to Don Balosa. Fascist officials tour the school, and the children perform athletic routines for them, while a gramophone hidden in the church bell tower plays The Internationale. Because of his anarchist past, Titta's father Aurelio is questioned and made to drink castor oil, and comes home to be washed by his wife Miranda. In summer the family takes Uncle Teo, Aurelio's brother, out of the asylum for a day in the country.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Amarcord (1973)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The title is a contraction of the Romagnol phrase a m'arcôrd, 'I remember', and Fellini said it also carried the Italian words amare (to love), cuore (heart), ricordare (to remember) and amaro (bitter); it became an Italian neologism meaning 'nostalgic evocation', 'fond memory'.
- In 1984, Fellini's Amarcord became the first film released for home video fully letterboxed, using RCA's Capacitance Electronic Disc videodisc format.
- Fellini cut a scene from the film after shooting it without sound; the 1973 Rizzoli novelization describes it, with Carlini, the man who empties the town's cesspits, called to retrieve a contessa's diamond ring from her toilet.
- The central role of Titta is based on Fellini's childhood friend from Rimini, Luigi Titta Benzi, who became a lawyer and remained in close contact with Fellini throughout his life.
- After Federico Fellini's Amarcord won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1975, it was rapidly picked up for international distribution.
