Giovanna Ralli

Biography

Giovanna Ralli is an Italian actress of stage, film and television who was born in Rome and made her theatrical debut at 13 with Peppino De Filippo's stage company. After appearing in Federico Fellini and Alberto Lattuada's Variety Lights (1950), she took her first substantial film roles in the mid-1950s, often in comedies. She had a leading part in Roberto Rossellini's General Della Rovere (1959), which won the Golden Lion at Venice, and a Golden Gate Award for best actress came for her work in Rossellini's Escape by Night. She won a Nastro d'Argento as best actress for La fuga (1964) and another as best supporting actress for We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974). Her brief Hollywood period began with Blake Edwards' What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966). From the early 1980s she worked mainly on stage, and in 2022 she received a David di Donatello for her career.

Giovanna Ralli said at the 2015 Taormina Film Fest, where she was honored with a special career award, that she was retiring from acting. Jasmine Trinca later persuaded her to appear one last time in Marcel!, Trinca's 2022 directorial debut.
