Plot summary
Jimmy Logan plays jazz for a living. At a party one night he watches a woman named Wanda Reed being murdered. Afterward he finds her corpse washed up on the beach, and he remembers what he saw. Wanda had worn fur and was mysterious, and Jimmy's obsession with her grows until it reaches madness. Rita is a nightclub singer. Then a woman turns up who looks very much like Wanda, and she sets out to take revenge on the people who killed her.

- In 1971 a Bologna court sentenced actors Klaus Kinski and Margaret Lee and producer Igor Bianchi to three months' imprisonment and a 40,000-lire fine for "complicity in an obscene spectacle", and all prints of the film were confiscated.
- Director Jesús Franco said the idea for the film came from a conversation with jazz musician Chet Baker, who described floating away from reality during his trumpet solos and then opening his eyes back into reality.
- The film has nothing to do with the novel Venus in Furs; the title was imposed on Franco by an American distributor, while the director preferred to call it Black Angel.
- Jesús Franco said the lead was intended to be a black man pursuing a woman played by Maria Rohm.
- Franco added scenes of Maria Rohm walking nude down a flight of stairs with a fur coat behind her simply to explain the film's title.
