Plot summary
Leigh Michaels leaves New York City for Los Angeles, where she moves into a high-rise apartment downtown and takes a job directing live television at a local station. She befriends Sophie, a fellow director, and meets Paul Winkless, a philosophy professor, at a bar. On her first day, an anonymous man calls her, and gifts and letters begin arriving, among them a telescope and a swimsuit. A letter about a free vacation troubles her. She trails whoever left it into the basement laundry room and hides beneath a floor drain grate when a man walks in. When the caller remarks on her appearance, she realizes he lives in the building across from hers, and she watches for him through the telescope with Sophie and Paul. A police officer tells her the man has committed no crime.
