Plot summary
Eddie Brock and the symbiote Venom are drinking in Mexico, having fled after their fight with Carnage. Headlines about the apparent murder of Patrick Mulligan name Eddie a prime suspect, and he sets out for New York City to find an old acquaintance who can clear him. He leaves a trace of Venom behind at the bar without meaning to. A Xenophage, a creature that has begun tracking the pair, attacks them as they travel. Soldier Rex Strickland runs Imperium, a government operation at the soon-to-be-decommissioned Area 51 where symbiotes that have landed on Earth are captured and studied. Its researchers, Dr. Teddy Paine and Sadie, work to learn why the symbiotes have come to Earth.

- Tom Holland and producer Amy Pascal discussed him reprising his MCU role as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in future Venom sequels, but neither Holland nor his character appeared in the finished film.
- Knull's comic-book creators, Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, were hired by Sony for an advisory relationship, and at least Cates read the screenplay; both expected monetary compensation for Knull's inclusion.
