Plot summary
Temp work at a public relations agency is where Kit has landed after her art career stalled, and she is living in her parents' house again. A letter arrives from a man who calls himself the Salesman, inviting her to the Store, which sells people what they need, and promising her the unicorn she dreamed of as a child if she meets his conditions. The first condition is a proper enclosure for the animal, and Kit asks Virgil, a hardware store worker, to put up a stable without telling him its purpose.
