Plot summary
In 2002 Toronto, thirteen-year-old Meilin Lee helps her parents run the temple dedicated to her mother's ancestor Sun Yee, and tries to earn the approval of her strict mother Ming. Ming is strict and overprotective, so Mei hides her crush on Devon, a clerk at a local store, and the boy band she and three friends follow. When Ming learns of the crush, she humiliates Mei publicly. That night Mei dreams of red pandas and wakes up in that shape; strong emotion alone brings the change, and her hair stays red once she is human again. Her parents tell her that Sun Yee was granted the ability to guard her daughters and her village in wartime, and that the panda can be sealed inside a talisman at a ceremony on the coming lunar eclipse, a month off.

- Shi was announced as writer and director on May 8, 2018, making her the first woman to solely direct a film at the studio, and the film's creative leads were also Pixar's first all-female team.
- Pixar hired Chiang in 2017, when she was only 12, to provide scratch vocals during development; two years later, listening to professional auditions, Shi and Collins realized they had fallen in love with her scratch vocals and could not envision anyone else playing Mei.
- Pixar kept production going by shipping an enormous amount of professional audio equipment to Chiang, who turned one of the rooms in her parents' house into a makeshift recording studio.
- Development on Turning Red lasted four years on an approximate $175 million budget, which made it the fastest production of any Pixar film.
