Plot summary
ENCOM and Dillinger Systems are competing to bring digital constructs into the real world. Eve Kim, ENCOM's chief executive, and her colleague Seth Flores travel to an old station near Skagway, Alaska that Kevin Flynn built decades ago, and there they recover his permanence code, which allows a construct to exist for longer than 29-minute intervals. They use it to move a digital orange tree into reality. Julian Dillinger, who heads Dillinger Systems and is the grandson of former ENCOM executive Ed Dillinger, presents his shareholders with Ares, a Master Control Program he calls perfect and expendable. Ares shows signs of self-awareness, and Julian sends him and his unit against ENCOM's Grid to pull Eve's personal data in search of the code.

- Disney planned to add an AI-generated character to Tron: Ares, a soldier named Bit who would have been a sidekick to Kevin Flynn, but abandoned the plan before filming to avoid controversy amid societal and governmental debate over regulating AI in filmmaking.
- In March 2015 Disney greenlit a third Tron film with Garrett Hedlund and Joseph Kosinski returning, to shoot that October in Vancouver, then scrapped it two months later. Hedlund said the box office failure of Tomorrowland caused the cancellation.
- Nine Inch Nails scored Tron: Ares at Disney's request, the first score released under the band's name since the 1996 video game Quake. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had previously composed nineteen soundtracks credited to their own names.
- Tron: Ares is the first film in the Tron series to be rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association; both Tron and Tron: Legacy were rated PG.
- Director Rønning said in September 2025 that Jeff Bridges would be the only returning actor from earlier Tron films, again playing Kevin Flynn; Garrett Hedlund's Sam Flynn and Cillian Murphy's Ed Dillinger Jr. did not return, due to creative choices and the actors' lack of interest.
- Reznor said taking the Nine Inch Nails name put the duo in a "grittier" mindset for the Tron: Ares score and let them "play by different rules", which pleased Disney.
