Plot summary
Bobby Funke, a sophomore at St. Donovan's High, wants a spot in Northwestern University's summer journalism program. He writes for the school paper but has yet to complete an article, so editor Clara Diaz hands him a profile of Paul Moore, the student council president and basketball star. Paul refuses to talk, and his friends push Funke around. Then Principal Kirkpatrick finds the upcoming SAT booklets missing from the safe in his office and rounds up the school's usual suspects, Funke among them, telling the group to watch its step. Senior Francesca Fachini asks Funke to help track down the stolen exams, and his reporting begins.
