Plot summary
On July 4, 1978, in Fort Lauderdale, twelve-year-old David Freeman cuts through the woods to collect his younger brother Jeff from a friend's house. A prank sends him into a ravine, and when he comes to, eight years have gone and it is 1986. He has not aged a day, and his face still matches the poster of the missing boy. His parents and a sixteen-year-old Jeff take him home. NASA, meanwhile, has captured an alien craft that came down through power lines, and tests on David's brainwaves show images of the ship and a map of its home galaxy. Dr. Louis Faraday asks him to spend 48 hours at a research facility, where intern Carolyn McAdams befriends him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Flight of the Navigator was the first film to use reflection mapping to create realistic reflections on a simulated chrome surface. Director Randal Kleiser's brother Jeff supervised the CGI, using software Jean Miller and Bob Hoffman had written that simulated a drop of water dripping from a faucet.
- The morphing effect was based on a 1985 work by Digital Effects for a Tide detergent commercial, and the shots were rendered on a Foonly F1 computer that had so little storage space that each frame's data were deleted to make way for the next.
- The interiors of the ship were shot in a warehouse an hour outside Oslo because the producer claimed he had blocked funds only available if used in Norway. Director Kleiser says it is uncertain the money ever came through, so the crew may have flown from Florida to Norway for no reason.
- Several actors auditioned for the role of David Freeman in Flight of the Navigator, including Joaquin Phoenix and Chris O'Donnell.
