Plot summary
Years after Andy leaves for college and hands his toys to Bonnie, Woody finds himself in a new room where another toy leads the play and the girl rarely picks him. When Bonnie is anxious about her kindergarten orientation, Woody hides in her backpack and quietly sets out craft scraps that she turns into a spork toy. The spork comes to life as Forky and declares himself trash rather than a toy, so Woody takes on the job of keeping him out of the bin. When Bonnie's family sets off on a road trip, Forky makes a break for it, and Woody follows.

- Don Rickles died in April 2017 before recording a line as Mr. Potato Head. His family asked Pixar to find a way to include him, so the studio went through 25 years of archive material, including unused lines from the first three films and the video games, and built the performance from it.
- Writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack walked away in the middle of production in November 2017, citing philosophical differences.
- Annie Potts was told by Pixar's then chief creative officer John Lasseter that Bo Peep had been left out of Toy Story 3 deliberately, because the studio was saving her for this film.
- Toy Story 4 ended a long Pixar habit: every feature from A Bug's Life in 1998 through Incredibles 2 had opened with a new in-house short, and this one carried none, in cinemas or at home.
- In August 2019 the film took the record for the highest-grossing G-rated release in the United States and Canada away from the hand-drawn Lion King, which had held it for 25 years with $422 million including re-releases.
- A brief shot of two mothers with a child at a kindergarten orientation led the American conservative group One Million Moms to call for a boycott of the film.
- Kelly Knievel and K&K Promotions sued Disney and Pixar in September 2020, claiming the stuntman toy Duke Caboom used Evel Knievel's likeness without permission. The judge threw the case out in 2021, ruling Duke Caboom was Disney's own expression and not an imitation of Knievel.
