Renee Houston
Biography
Renée Houston was a Scottish revue artist and comedy actress whose career took in variety, film, television and radio. She grew up in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, in a theatrical family that toured as James Houston and Company, and she and her sister Billie formed the Houston Sisters, one of the leading variety acts of the 1920s. They made a short musical film in 1926, from a script Houston wrote, produced by Lee De Forest using his Phonofilm process. The double act ended in 1936, and Houston carried on alone as a comedienne and actress, appearing in Noel Gay's revue Love Laughs! and later reviving the act. In her later years she took battleaxe roles, notably Vic Spanner's mother in Carry On at Your Convenience (1971), and she worked for Roman Polanski on Repulsion (1965) and Cul-De-Sac (1966). She also appeared on radio, including The Clitheroe Kid and Petticoat Line, and published her autobiography, Don't Fence Me In, in 1974.
