Ann Dvorak
Biography
Ann Dvorak was an American actress of stage and screen who began as a child in silent pictures. Born Anna McKim in New York City in 1911, she was the child of the silent actress Anna Lehr and the director Edwin McKim, and she made her film debut at five in Ramona (1916). In the late 1920s she danced in uncredited chorus parts at MGM and assisted the choreographer Sammy Lee before Howard Hughes groomed her as a dramatic actress. Pre-Code hits followed: Scarface (1932), as Paul Muni's sister, Three on a Match (1932), the Cagney vehicle The Crowd Roars (1932), and Sky Devils (1932) opposite Spencer Tracy. A stylish leading lady at Warner Bros. in the 1930s, she later appeared in such films as The Case of the Stuttering Bishop and Abilene Town (1946). She made her only Broadway appearance in 1948 in The Respectful Prostitute, and in 1960 the Hollywood Walk of Fame gave her a star.
