Plot summary
Larry Darrant comes home to London from an unsuccessful venture abroad and finds Wanda, the married woman he loves. Her long-absent husband, Henry Wallen, is waiting in her rooms, demanding money and threatening Larry with a knife. Henry falls in the fight and dies. Larry leaves the body in a brick archway and asks his brother Keith, a barrister hoping for a judgeship, what he should do. Keith, worried that a scandal would ruin his chances, urges Larry to leave the country; Larry refuses. A tramp named Evan picks up a pair of gloves Larry has dropped, and the police arrest him for the murder. With three weeks until the trial, Larry and Wanda marry and try to crowd a lifetime into the time he has left before he hands himself in.
