Plot summary
Sergeant Jack Stryker is sent home from Vietnam after taking two bullets in the leg, carried out by one of his own men, and given an honorable discharge. Half of his squadron was killed in the war. Back home he wants a quiet life in his cabin and a fresh start with Sally, the girlfriend he left behind, and with the buddies who came through the war with him. Then a murderous cult comes into town to continue its rampage, led by a man who never gives his name. Among its followers are a bald young woman and a man who carries a chain.

- Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except started out in 1980 as a Super-8 film called Stryker's War, made to drum up interest from investors. Bruce Campbell and Josh Becker worked out the story while driving home from the Tennessee set of The Evil Dead.
- The film's interior sets were mostly Bruce Campbell's own garage in suburban Detroit, Michigan, dressed up to pass as either a military base or the home of Stryker.
- A small but devoted cult following grew around the film, and its best known fan group, based in Stockton, California, has marked it with communal art projects and parties to unveil the work, a tradition running over 15 years.
