Biography

Sam Raimi is an American filmmaker who was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, and began making Super 8 movies with Bruce Campbell before his 1981 horror feature The Evil Dead won a devoted following. He went on to write and direct the rest of that trilogy, including Evil Dead II (1987), and later scored a major box office success with Spider-Man, which took in more than $800 million worldwide and led to two sequels. His other directing work spans Darkman, the western The Quick and the Dead, the crime thriller A Simple Plan, Drag Me to Hell, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Send Help. Raimi has also acted in films such as Body Bags (1993), Indian Summer (1993), and Spies Like Us (1985). On television he produced Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, and Ash vs Evil Dead, and he founded the production companies Renaissance Pictures and Ghost House Pictures.

Early training
Raimi studied English at Università Bocconi in Milan, Italy, but after three semesters he left the school to film The Evil Dead.
Big break
A longtime comic book fan, Raimi tried to turn The Shadow into a movie but could not get the rights, so he invented his own superhero, Darkman, in 1990. It was his first major studio picture.
A role that slipped away
Raimi planned two more Spider-Man sequels after the third film but could not find a satisfactory script, and later said the aborted Spider-Man 4 was meant to redeem himself.
