Plot summary

After a dishonorable discharge from the Canadian special forces, Wade Wilson works as a freelance mercenary. He meets Vanessa, an escort, and a year later she accepts his proposal. Wade is then diagnosed with terminal cancer, and a recruiter offers him an experimental treatment. Rather than let Vanessa watch him die, Wade leaves her. Ajax and Angel Dust run the laboratory where he is injected with a serum meant to awaken dormant mutant genes. Days of torture follow, until a hypobaric chamber triggers a regenerative healing factor. It counteracts the cancer but leaves him severely disfigured. Wade adopts the name Deadpool and hunts the man behind the program for a cure.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Deadpool (2016)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Reynolds, Miller and the writers had discussed leaking the test footage themselves, and Reynolds first thought Miller had done it before deciding the leak came from someone at Fox; in September 2025 he admitted that he leaked it.
  • Changing Negasonic Teenage Warhead's powers needed Marvel's permission, which Tim Miller got from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in a deal where 20th Century Fox handed Marvel the film rights to Ego the Living Planet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
  • Forty-eight hours before the film received its official green light from Fox, the studio cut the budget by $7-8 million down to $58 million, which forced a last-minute rewrite that cut about nine pages from the 110-page script.
  • Deadpool was initially banned in China over its violence and nudity, and only premiered there at the 2018 Beijing International Film Festival, where the original version played without any edits made specifically for Chinese censors.
  • For Deadpool's initial scarring from the warehouse fire, Rodeo FX referenced rotting fruit and maggot-eaten meat, and added a CGI penis to Reynolds that visual effects supervisor Wayne Brinton said "you don't even notice [but] when it wasn't there it looked really weird".
  • When Fox was unwilling to pay Reese and Wernick to be on set every day, Reynolds paid the two writers' salaries himself so that they could be there.
  • The final makeup required nine silicone prosthetics to cover Reynolds' head and took several hours to apply, and for the scene where the character is naked it took six hours to apply his full-body makeup.
  • Director Tim Miller said Skrein "worked really, really hard" for the fight sequences and completed around 80% of his own stunts in the film.
