George Montgomery
Biography
George Montgomery was an American actor known for Westerns, and he also worked as a director and writer. He grew up on a Montana ranch, where he learned to handle horses and cattle, and he studied interior design before leaving college for Hollywood. Stunt work came fast, including a job on Conquest (1937), and at Republic Pictures he took bit parts billed as George Letz. 20th Century Fox signed him in 1939 and promoted him to leading roles, playing Ginger Rogers's love interest in Roxie Hart (1942) and Philip Marlowe in The Brasher Doubloon (1947). Later Westerns included Belle Starr's Daughter (1948), then the swashbuckler The Sword of Monte Cristo (1951), the Westerns Pawnee (1957) and Gun Duel in Durango (1957), and the war film Battle of the Bulge (1965). He starred in the NBC series Cimarron City, made his directing debut with The Steel Claw (1961), and he both directed and appeared in Satan's Harvest (1970).
