Plot summary
Christmas is coming to the kingdom, and Odette and Derek will spend it with Queen Uberta at her castle. The sorcerer Rothbart has come back as a ghost, and he wants a mortal body. He believes he can get one by spoiling the kingdom's Christmas cheer, which is stronger than the Forbidden Arts. A black cat called Number 9 agrees to help in exchange for nine extra lives, and the cat leads Derek to a cellar, where a chest marked with an R releases Rothbart. As a ghost he can cast small spells that turn people unkind, and he keeps at it until nearly the whole kingdom is at odds. Chimes that play Far Longer than Forever reveal him and stop him from moving, so Odette and Derek set them around the castle.
