Katherine Moennig

Biography

Born in Philadelphia, Katherine Moennig is an American actress and producer who began her career in advertising and music videos before landing her first major television role as Jake Pratt in the WB series Young Americans in 2000. She later made guest appearances on Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and appeared in films such as The Shipping News (2001) and Invitation to a Suicide (2004). Her breakthrough came as Shane McCutcheon on Showtime's The L Word, which ran from 2004 to 2009, and she later played Lena Burnham in Ray Donovan from 2013 to 2019, reprising the role in Ray Donovan: The Movie (2022). Other credits include The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), Art School Confidential (2006), Everybody's Fine (2009), Three Rivers, Grown-ish, and the sequel series The L Word: Generation Q. She also made her Off-Broadway debut in Guardians and started the podcast Pants.

Moennig tried out for the part of Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry, and around that same time she was in a Fleet Bank commercial.
Early training
When she was 18, Moennig relocated to New York City to train in acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She also took part in stage productions and theater training, which included work at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
First role
In Peter Morris's play Guardians, Moennig took the role of "American Girl" for her Off-Broadway debut, acting alongside Lee Pace. The story of Lynndie England loosely inspired the play.

Moennig landed her first major television role in 2000, playing Jacqueline "Jake" Pratt on the WB series Young Americans. The character pretends to be a boy so she can attend an all-male boarding school.
Behind the camera
In 2020, Moennig launched a podcast called Pants alongside Leisha Hailey, her co-star and close friend. It lasted three seasons and was canceled in 2023.
