Biography

Ron Randell was an Australian actor who began on the stage in 1937 and became a radio juvenile before his film break as aviator Charles Kingsford Smith in Smithy (1946). Born in Sydney, he moved to Hollywood under a Columbia Pictures contract and appeared in Bulldog Drummond at Bay (1947), The Loves of Carmen (1948), The Mating of Millie (1948), and Kiss Me Kate (1953), along with I Am a Camera (1955). He returned to the stage often, including a Broadway run in The World of Suzie Wong, and King of Kings (1961) was among his most acclaimed later performances. He also worked in television and directed a Sydney stage production. He died in 2005.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Randell tested for the role of Stanley in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat but did not get it, doing the test with an American accent because he did not know they wanted a cockney.

    At 19, Randell made his legitimate stage debut in Quiet Wedding, a production staged at the Minerva Theatre in Sydney.

    Randell was set to appear in The Enchanted after Browning Version, but Actors Equity blocked the job, ruling that as a foreigner he had to wait six months before another play.
