Plot summary
In 1952, England prepares for the coronation, and schoolmaster John Standing has just lost his job. At a hotel he meets Johnny Spence, a businessman who looks exactly like him, and Spence talks him into a night of drinking. Standing wakes to find his clothes and wallet gone and Spence vanished. George, the Spence family chauffeur, collects him and drives him to the family home, where Standing cannot explain what happened. He is drawn into the household, into Spence's failing glass business, and into the lives of the women around Spence: his wife Frances, his mother, his sister Blanche, his young daughter, and two mistresses, Nina, his sister-in-law, and Bela, a French artist in the nearby town.
