Biography

Joe Mantell was an American actor who started in live television, appearing in Paddy Chayefsky plays for The Philco Television Playhouse under the director Delbert Mann, including The Bachelor Party. He first played Angie, the best friend of the lead, in a 1953 broadcast of Marty and took the part again for the film Marty (1955), which brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963), in a brief though pivotal role, and in the anti-censorship drama Storm Center (1956). Television kept him busy, with appearances on The Untouchables, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Ironside and Maude and a recurring part on Pete and Gladys from 1961 to 1962. In Chinatown (1974) he played Lawrence Walsh and spoke its closing line, returning to the character in The Two Jakes (1990).
