Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Annie Get Your Gun (1950)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Judy Garland, MGM's biggest musical comedy star, was originally cast as Annie Oakley; she recorded all her songs for the soundtrack and worked for two months under the direction of Busby Berkeley and dance director Robert Alton.
  • The underweight and physically exhausted Garland arrived late or not at all for each day's filming schedule; after a couple of warnings, MGM finally suspended her contract in 1949 and she was fired from the picture.
  • Berkeley was severe with Garland and the two clashed at once; she was suffering from overwork and exhaustion, the dissolution of her marriage to director Vincente Minnelli, and an addiction to prescription medication, having recently completed the hit musical In the Good Old Summertime.
  • Ginger Rogers lobbied hard for the role, but the producers felt she was too mature and glamorous; Rogers said studio head L.B. Mayer told her, "You stay in your silk stockings and high heels, Ginger. This part isn't for you." Doris Day was considered too, but Jack L. Warner refused to loan her to MGM.
  • Betty Hutton clashed with co-star Howard Keel, who years later recalled her as "a scene stealer" and "insecure"; in his autobiography he wrote that on one occasion Hutton felt he was upstaging her and they reshot the scene 35 times until she was satisfied.
  • After being released from the hospital, Judy Garland visited the set, and when Hutton greeted her with a bouncy "Hiya, Judy!" she was brought up short by a seething string of profanities; years later the two women became friendly while each was performing in Las Vegas.
  • Actor Frank Morgan, cast as Buffalo Bill, died of a sudden heart attack shortly after filming had begun and was replaced by Louis Calhern.
  • In 1974 MGM withdrew Annie Get Your Gun from distribution over a dispute with Irving Berlin about music rights, which prevented the public from viewing the film for 26 years; it was not seen again in its entirety until the film's 50th anniversary in 2000.
