Plot summary
Vicki Robbins, a pop singer, collapses from exhaustion during a television performance and is told to rest. She takes a cottage on Seagull Island, where the proprietors, Ralph and Mary Hargrove, let out rooms. Ralph keeps bees, and so does his neighbor, H. W. Manfred. Manfred says a recording of a death's-head moth's high note puts his bees in a trance. Vicki finds the Hargroves' bitter marital strife restful. At a ministry office, officials read letters from a beekeeper who says he has bred killer bees and will loose them unless someone takes him seriously; they set him down as a lunatic.
