Plot summary
Peter Carter moves his wife Sally and their nine-year-old daughter Jean to a small Canadian town, where he has been appointed school principal. One day Jean and her eleven-year-old friend Lucille go into the mansion of Clarence Olderberry Sr., an elderly man who asks the girls to remove their clothes and dance naked for sweets. That night Jean, restless, tells her parents what happened. Peter files a complaint. The local police chief doubts Jean's account, and the town, where the Olderberry family is the wealthiest and most influential, closes ranks against the newcomers. The Carters, however, refuse to back down.

- Columbia could not release Never Take Sweets from a Stranger in the US at first: the Production Code found the film violated the edict on depicting sexual perversion, and it only reached American art houses in 1961.
- British prints let Patrick Allen snarl "I swear I'll kill the bastard" about ten minutes in; US prints swapped in the word "swine", re-recorded by Allen, but the picture still shows him saying "bastard".
- Janina Faye, who plays the daughter Jean Carter, was auditioned for Roger Garis's stage play but rejected at ten as too young for the subject; director Cyril Frankel insisted she be in the film version.
- The film was the first that cinematographer Freddie Francis shot for Hammer Films; he called it "quite a good film" but did not think it got a big showing, adding that Hammer films never really did.
- Although the story is set in a small Canadian town, exteriors for Never Take Sweets from a Stranger were filmed at Burnham and Black Park in Buckinghamshire, Black Park appearing in many Hammer films for its look and its closeness to Bray Studios.
