Plot summary
In New Salem, a serial killer abducts young women and keeps them for weeks. Aubrey Fleming, a pianist who writes stories, goes missing during a night out with friends. The FBI task force assembled to track the killer finds no sign of her. A driver comes upon a young woman beside a deserted road, badly hurt and missing one hand and one leg. She looks just like Aubrey, so she is brought to a hospital. Her parents, Susan and Daniel, keep watch. When she can speak, she says she is Dakota Moss, a stripper, and she keeps insisting on it.

- To prepare for playing a stripper, Lindsay Lohan took daily pole-dancing lessons for four hours at a time through Sheila Kelley's S Factor studio, saying the training left her covered in bruises.
- Production shut down twice in its first weeks: once when Lindsay Lohan was hospitalized for overheating and dehydration, and again soon after when she needed appendix surgery.
- While shooting, Lohan checked into the Wonderland Center rehab facility for a 30-day stay but kept filming her scenes at night and returning to the facility afterward; director Chris Sivertson said the production never lost a single shooting day because of it.
- Media attention around Lohan was so intense during the shoot that paparazzi following her sometimes ended up visible in the background of finished shots in the film.
- Director Chris Sivertson revealed in 2019 that a three-and-a-half-hour director's cut of the film exists, containing far more of the FBI investigation storyline that was stripped out of the theatrical version to emphasize the film's stranger, surreal elements instead.
