Plot summary
In 1983, a bus bound for Mont-Laurier, Quebec, breaks down, and two teenage passengers, Martin Asher and Matt Soulsby, rent a car instead. When a tire blows, Martin remarks that he and Matt are the same height, pushes him in front of a passing truck, and leaves with Matt's guitar and clothes. Twenty-one years later the FBI profiler Illeana Scott arrives in Montreal to help catch a killer who travels North America by taking over the identities of the men he murders. Rebecca Asher tells the police she has seen her son Martin, believed dead for years, aboard a ferry bound for Quebec City. Art dealer James Costa, a witness to the most recent killing, draws the man he saw, and investigators find a chained body in an apartment.

- Angelina Jolie was far from the first choice. Jennifer Lopez was in negotiations to star back in April 2001, with Tony Scott then attached to direct, and Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow were both approached for the part before Jolie and Ethan Hawke came into talks in September 2002.
- The script passed through a string of hands: Jon Bokenkamp wrote the original draft, then Nicholas Kazan, Hilary Seitz and finally David Ayer revised it up to February 2003. Despite all that rewriting, the WGA credit system gave screenplay and adaptation credit to Bokenkamp alone.
