Pat Roach
Biography
Pat Roach was an English actor, professional wrestler and martial artist whose screen work from the 1970s to the 1990s often saw him cast as a henchman. He grew up in Birmingham and was a national judo champion before his wrestling career, in which he held British and European heavyweight championships. Stanley Kubrick gave him his first film role, a bouncer in A Clockwork Orange. He went on to play strongman parts such as the non-speaking Hephaestus in Clash of the Titans (1981), a SPECTRE assassin in Never Say Never Again (1983), Thoth-Amon in Conan the Destroyer (1984) and General Kael in Willow (1988). He was rejected for the role of Darth Vader in Star Wars, though George Lucas later cast him as burly villains in the Indiana Jones series. On television he was Brian Busbridge in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Edgar Evans in The Last Place on Earth. He died in 2004.

Roach lost out on playing Darth Vader in Star Wars. Its director, George Lucas, went on to give him roles as burly villains in the Indiana Jones films of the 1980s.
