Plot summary
Colleen Hannigan, a former singer who drinks heavily, runs a Harlem foster home where Annie Bennett, ten, lives with four other girls, Pepper, Isabella, Tessie and Mia. Every Friday, Annie waits outside the restaurant Domani's, because a receipt there promised her parents would return for her. While she is defending a stray dog from some bullies, a car nearly hits her, and Will Stacks, a germaphobic cellphone mogul campaigning for mayor, pulls her clear. The rescue is filmed and spreads online, lifting his poll numbers. His campaign manager, Guy Danlily, persuades him to take Annie into his penthouse to keep the attention going. Annie befriends Stacks's assistant, Grace Farrell, and adopts the dog, naming her Sandy.
