Plot summary
Three years after her mother Amanda died in a car crash, Max lives with her aunt. On the anniversary of the accident, her friend Gertie, Gertie's stepbrother Duncan and their friend Chris talk her into attending a double feature of Camp Bloodbath, the 1986 slasher film that Amanda is known for, and its sequel. Chris's ex-girlfriend Vicki is there too. When a fire breaks out in the theater, Max cuts through the screen and the group walks through, waking in the woods at the start of Camp Bloodbath. Counselors Kurt and Tina drive by, and Duncan passes the friends off as counselors to get a ride to Camp Blue Finch, where they meet Blake and Amanda, in character as Nancy, and the masked killer Billy Murphy stalks the camp.

- Co-writer Joshua John Miller's father, Jason Miller, played Father Karras in The Exorcist, and the script was partly inspired by Miller growing up watching his parent die on screen; he said they tried to deconstruct what a second chance inside a movie would be like.
- Composer Gregory James Jenkins said his hardest task was writing a score heavily steeped in the 1980s while still offering something new, and that the result is not a typical film score, being mostly electronic and built from a lot of analog synths.
