Plot summary
After the death of her husband Jerry, Elaine Parks, a young witch, settles in Arcata, California, a town that puts up with witchcraft. Her mentor Barbara owns the Victorian building where she takes an apartment, and Trish Manning, an interior decorator, looks after the place and befriends her. Trish brings her to a tea room, and Richard, Trish's husband, arrives and is drawn to Elaine at once. In her rooms Elaine mixes potions and casts spells, and she performs a rite meant to draw a lover to her. Wayne, a professor in the town, accepts her invitation to a dinner she cooks at his woodland cabin.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Love Witch (2016)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Anna Biller designed the sets and costumes to emulate the style of classic Hollywood films, hunting vintage furniture in salvage stores or building it herself. It took her six months to make Elaine's pentagram rug from scratch, and while she found vintage pieces such as Gunne Sax dresses, many important costumes she had to make herself.
- Cinematographer M. David Mullen used diffusion filters on the lens for certain close-up shots and a special kaleidoscope lens for a drug trip sequence, and the driving scenes were shot with rear projection photography, both to give glamor to the lead actress and in tribute to the opening of the Hitchcock film The Birds.
- The Love Witch is one of the last films to have its original camera negative cut on 35 mm film, and it was the only new, non-repertory feature presented on 35 mm film at the 2016 International Film Festival Rotterdam.
- Casting involved a typical audition process, and writer-director Anna Biller has said the most difficult role to fill was that of Trish: even though she did not intend for an English actress to play the role, she could not find any Americans who were right for it.
