Biography

Helmut Griem was a German actor of film, television and theater who later turned to directing. Born in Hamburg, he built his career on the stage, working at theaters in Hamburg, Vienna and Munich, among them the Thalia Theater, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, the Burgtheater and the Munich Kammerspiele. International audiences knew him as the SS officer Aschenbach in The Damned, and he played Baron Maximilian von Heune in the Academy Award-winning Cabaret (1972), probably his best-known performance abroad. His other films included The McKenzie Break (1970) and Ludwig (1973), and on television he was Alexander Menshikov in NBC's Peter the Great and starred in the mini-series The Devil's Lieutenant. He won the Bambi Award twice, in 1961 and 1976, and later directed for the stage, including Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night. He died in 2004.
