Plot summary
Stephen Reinhart, an American scientist, comes to the village of Arkham to see Susan Witley, the woman he plans to marry. The locals shun him. Susan's father, Nahum, greets him without warmth at the Witley estate. Her mother, Letitia, is bedridden and speaks to him from behind a bed canopy that hides her face. Letitia offers Stephen a box with a gold earring inside, saying it was Helga's. Helga, the maid, had grown ill and then disappeared. At dinner, Susan and Nahum call a nearby stretch of ruined ground the work of a fire, but neither can explain it fully. A strange light glows from the greenhouse, and noises come from the basement.
