Plot summary
John Brady has spent most of his life in Galesburg, Illinois, where he is chief of police. His wife Catherine died years ago, and he never believed the death was accidental; she had worked for Dr. Le Sange, who died not long after she did. John's son Pete is a high school senior who needs money for college applications, so he agrees to become a paid subject in the experiments Gwen Parkinson conducts in the psychology department at the local university. For her class Gwen screens a recorded lecture by her late mentor, Le Sange. John is meanwhile looking into the murders of local teenagers, and he has begun seeing Barbara Moorehead, who waits tables in town.
