Plot summary
Minden, Louisiana, is a factory town with a failed economy, and its Pop Warner team, the Minden Browns, has few believers. Curtis Plummer, once a football player, comes back there with no money and no plans. Claire, Jasmine's mother, works at the local diner and asks him to watch her daughter after school. Jasmine's father Roy walked out five years ago, and she keeps his watch, expecting him to return. Curtis sees how well the girl throws a football and coaches her. He persuades her to try out for the Minden Browns. The coach and the players do not want a girl, but her arm earns her a place on the roster. Even so, she spends the games on the bench.
