Plot summary
Kempton Bunton drives a taxi in Newcastle upon Tyne and sends scripts to the BBC. He refuses to pay for a television license, arguing that pensioners should not have to, and thirteen days in Durham prison for watching television without one do not change his mind; nor does losing his taxi job after he talks too much to passengers. His wife Dorothy cleans and babysits for a councillor. Their son Jackie wants to build boats, while his elder brother Kenny works in construction in Leeds and is caught up in low-level crime. Dorothy lets Kempton spend two days in London seeking press and parliamentary attention, on condition that he gives up writing and campaigning if none comes. A painting goes missing from the National Gallery, and ransom notes follow.
