Plot summary
Princess Oriana rules the Kingdom of Oriana. Madam Pearl, a fortune-teller, warns her that her uncle, the Duke of Zill, is invading with a mechanical army. The princess and Pearl descend into a cavern beneath the castle and try to work an ancient device called the Dimensporter, hoping it will carry them to another dimension and bring back a hero. The Duke's Cylinder robots catch the pair, and the Duke seizes the kingdom. As the robots take the princess away, she sheds a magical tear that falls into the Dimensporter in her place and travels to Felix's dimension, waking him from a nap under a palm tree and leading him to the abandoned gold mine. Felix takes his magical bag of tricks through the Dimensporter. The Professor and his nephew Poindexter, who spied on him, follow.

- Felix's opening introduction and end-credits model were rendered in CGI with then-new motion capture technology, while the rest of the film was hand-drawn. Animation was produced at Pannonia Film Studio in Hungary, with parts subcontracted to studios in Poland and Bulgaria.
- Don Oriolo, son of TV series creator Joe Oriolo, began work on a feature-length television special intended as a pilot. After taking the project to Europe, it ended up with director Tibor Hernádi and his Hungarian crew at a cost of US$9 million.
