Plot summary
Mark Steele, a neurologist, knows his wife Maria is cheating on him. When she comes home in the early hours, he asks for a divorce; she refuses and laughs at him. That night he dreams of strangling her. Maria goes away for the weekend, Mark drives off, and on Monday he wakes in his office with the weekend gone from his memory. The police tell him Maria has been murdered. A button from his jacket was found near the spot where her body was left. His nurse, Stella Madden, advises him to keep his suspicions from the police for now. Maria's lover, the architect Robert Duval, has been arrested, and Inspector Gregg keeps his eye on Mark. Duval's disabled wife asks Mark to help clear her husband.

- Gale Sondergaard was set to star opposite Lon Chaney Jr. in the Inner Sanctum mystery films but was dropped just before filming began, and her role was rewritten and given to Patricia Morison. Director Reginald LeBorg speculated she was dropped because she was a leftist.
- The "stream of consciousness" voiceover that became a feature of the Inner Sanctum Mysteries was written into the script at Lon Chaney Jr.'s insistence, because the actor found the dialogue too technical to say.
