Plot summary
Banker Walter Craig has disappeared from his home, and his friend Ed Moline hires Nick Trayne to take the case. Trayne once worked as a private detective; he now makes money as a paid listener. Craig is found in his own library a few nights later, his mind gone. Neurologist Dr. Bruhling reports that Craig's brain has been damaged, that only another person could have caused it, and that Craig must be watched. Suspicion falls on everyone living on the estate: Craig's wife Helen, his daughter Tina and her fiance Arthur Wallace, his sister Delia Phillips and her husband George, his friend and former partner Tony Weldon, and Cedric the butler. Nick rules Billie Hilton out and takes her on as his assistant.
