Plot summary
Monte tends bar at an upscale New York restaurant, and Lucy waits tables there. Monte is British and wants to stay in the country, so he proposes marriage to Lucy, hinting that he would be killed if he returned to Britain. The marriage would bring him his green card and American citizenship. Lucy hopes to become an escape artist, and she is devoted to the memory of Harry Houdini. Her friend Vivian designs lingerie and has ambitions of her own. Vivian and Lucy decide to rob the restaurant where Lucy works, and Monte agrees to help them, on the condition that Lucy marries him.

- When Richard Shepard was approached in 2021 to make a director's cut of the film, its rights had already passed through two bankrupt companies and its copyright had been claimed by the Screen Actors Guild, while its European distributor and processing lab had also folded, leaving him to hunt down a print.
- Richard Shepard found a 35 mm print of the film in 2022 through a Zurich art theater, then announced on Twitter in August 2023 that he had recovered its rights and remastered it in 4K with a director's cut.
