Marlee Matlin
Biography
Marlee Matlin is an American actress who began performing as a child and was discovered by Henry Winkler during a stage production. Her film debut came as Sarah Norman in Children of a Lesser God (1986), a role that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe. She has worked mostly in television, playing Joey Lucas on The West Wing, appearing on The L Word and Switched at Birth, and voicing Stella on Family Guy. Her work as a district attorney in Reasonable Doubts brought two Golden Globe nominations, while guest spots on Picket Fences, Seinfeld, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Practice earned four Primetime Emmy nominations. She had a prominent supporting part in It's My Party (1996) and in 2015 joined the Broadway revival of Spring Awakening. For CODA (2021), her cast won a Screen Actors Guild ensemble honor, and she received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2009.

Behind the camera
In 2010, Matlin made a pilot for a reality show she called My Deaf Family and showed it to national network executives. They were interested but no network bought it, so on March 29, 2010, she put the pilot on YouTube and began a viral marketing campaign.
