Plot summary

Baby Bink is nine months old and lives in a Chicago mansion with his socialite parents, Laraine and Bing, who are preparing for his picture to run in the local paper. Three crooks, Eddie, Norby and Veeko, arrive at the house dressed as baby photographers from that newspaper and take the child, planning to ask five million dollars for him. Waiting at their hideout, Norby reads Bink his favorite picture book, Baby's Day Out, and dozes off. Bink follows a pigeon from the book out through a window and sets off across the city, treating each new sight as another page of the story. His parents and the nanny, Gilbertine, work with an FBI agent at the mansion while the three men scramble after the baby.

Recalling a visit to Kolkata in 1999, Roger Ebert said the owner of a large theater told him Baby's Day Out was their most successful film, running full for more than 17 weeks.
A tie-in video game was planned, completed and slated for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and Game Boy in October 1994, but was canceled shortly before release; two prototypes of the Genesis port have since surfaced online, while the Game Boy and Super NES versions are lost.
Senior digital artist Henry LaBounta had just started when he was handed the computer-generated Chicago needed for the shots looking down from the crane; visual effects supervisor John Knoll told him "you're the 3D expert guy", as most of the team only had experience with 2D compositing.
The film was remade in four languages: in Telugu in 1995 as Sisindri, in Hindi as Ek Phool Teen Kante in 1997, in Malayalam in 1999 as James Bond, and in Sinhalese as Onna Babo in 2002.
The film was mentioned in the 2026 Disney+ series Wonder Man, in which Joe Pantoliano, one of the actors from Baby's Day Out, plays a fictionalized version of himself who is shown to be unusually proud of it.
