Andre Gregory
Biography
Andre Gregory is a French-born American actor, writer and theater director who grew up in Los Angeles and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. He served as artistic director of Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia from 1964 to 1967, founded his own company, The Manhattan Project, in 1968, and staged avant-garde productions including Alice in Wonderland in 1970. His signature screen role came in My Dinner with Andre (1981), Louis Malle's film, which he wrote with Wallace Shawn and which won Best American Film of 1981 from the Boston Society of Film Critics and that group's screenplay award. His other film roles include Reverend Spellgood in The Mosquito Coast (1986) and parts in Demolition Man (1993), while in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) he played John the Baptist. He also directed the Chekhov workshop released as Vanya on 42nd Street (1994), and his Ibsen work became A Master Builder (2014).

A change of course
Hired in 1964 to lead Theatre of the Living Arts, a new Philadelphia company, Gregory stayed three years and earned national recognition. A dispute with the board over the premiere of Rochelle Owens's Beclch led to his 1967 departure.
Behind the camera
In 1968 Gregory started his own theater company, The Manhattan Project. He directed Our Late Night, Wallace Shawn's first produced play, in 1975.
