Plot summary
Nicola and Matteo Carati grow up in a middle-class family in Rome, the sons of Angelo and Adriana, with two sisters, Giovanna and Francesca. In the summer of 1966 Matteo leaves his first exam unfinished, while Nicola sits one toward his medical qualification. At the institution where Matteo works, he takes mental patients for walks and becomes interested in one of them, Giorgia, whom he brings away from the asylum to join the trip he and his brother had planned toward Norway. In the decades that follow their paths divide: Nicola turns to psychiatry and to Giulia, a university student he meets after the flood of Florence, while Matteo joins the police and is posted to Sicily, where he meets Mirella, a photographer.

- The Best of Youth was bought by Rai 1 but indefinitely shelved from its fall 2002 air date, then delayed again after TV spots had already aired. The freedom of expression association Articolo 21, liberi di... accused Rai 1 directors Agostino Saccà and Fabrizio Del Noce of a politically charged use of public television in favour of the Berlusconi government.
- After its world premiere at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, The Best of Youth won the Prize Un Certain Regard, and is credited with rekindling Rai's interest, which led the broadcaster to give the film a theatrical release before airing it.
