Plot summary
Commander Harold Roberts takes a small United States Navy party to Antarctica to study an inland lake whose water is warm despite the nearness of the South Pole. Pilot Lt. Jack Carmen, machinist Steve Miller and reporter Maggie Hathaway fly with him. Radio orders recall the helicopter as a storm approaches, and the fuel left cannot carry it around the weather. In the fog it strikes a pterosaur, and the rotor control rod is bent beyond use. The helicopter sets down below sea level inside a warm crater, a steamy jungle of giant carnivorous plants and living dinosaurs. Search planes pass overhead, but the party's radio calls go unheard.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Land Unknown (1957)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The studio originally planned The Land Unknown as a lavish Technicolor feature, but the budget was slashed after the disappointing box office of Universal's This Island Earth in 1955. The feature was shot in CinemaScope but on black-and-white film, and plans to shoot at Falls Lake were canceled.
- The dinosaurs include a pair of Stegosaurus played by monitor lizards and a Tyrannosaurus rex played by Smyth, while the small mammal the crew finds, later eaten by a giant carnivorous plant, is called a tarsier but is actually a loris.
