Biography

Shirley Patterson was a Canadian-born actress who appeared mostly in B movies during the 1940s and 1950s, sometimes billed as Shawn Smith. Born in Winnipeg and raised in Eastend, Saskatchewan, she moved with her family to Los Angeles, where she finished her schooling. She came to acting by way of beauty pageants, winning the Miss California Pageant in 1940 among 15 contest victories, though she was later disqualified for being underage. A talent scout spotted her in a small theater production, and Columbia Pictures signed her. Over a career that took in roughly 40 films, a few television parts and a serial, she played the heroine Linda Page in the 1943 serial Batman. Her later credits included The Land Unknown (1957) and the science fiction film It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958).
