Plot summary
On a Welsh mountain, Dr. Abner Perry and David Innes send the Iron Mole, their drilling machine, on a short test run. Heat from the surrounding magma overwhelms them, and the Mole bores far deeper than planned until it breaks through into a land at the Earth's core where prehistoric plants and animals live. A bird-headed dinosaur chases them, and the Sagoths, ape-like creatures, capture them. The Sagoths serve the Mahars, telepathic flying reptiles who control minds and hold the human tribes in slavery. David is drawn to Dia, a princess among the slaves, and he and Perry look for a way to help her people.

- The shoot called for a lot of fire, and director Kevin Connor recalled small explosions on the set, including bubbling eggs blown up in a cauldron that left the sound-stage floors covered in goo.
- The film's monsters were designed so that small stunt men could work inside the suits in a crouched position or on all fours, a set-up so cramped that the performers had to take frequent breathers.
- Director Kevin Connor devised a mauve-orange color scheme for the underground world of Pellucidar, and because most of the film was shot on one huge stage, the color was very controllable.
