Plot summary

Professor George Edward Challenger comes back from the Amazon Basin claiming that he found living dinosaurs on a barely known plateau there. He asks the London Zoological Society to pay for a second trip that would prove it. The group that forms around him includes Lord John Roxton, a big-game hunter; the newsman Ed Malone; Challenger's rival Professor Summerlee; and helicopter pilot Manuel Gomez with his assistant Jose Costa. Malone's employer, the publisher Stuart Holmes, advances the money, and his children Jennifer and David travel with the party. From London the expedition reaches Brazil and climbs to the plateau, where a Brontosaurus wrecks the helicopter.

In 1959 Allen purchased the rights to Doyle's novel for $100,000. He wanted to make the film with Trevor Howard and Peter Ustinov in support of Rains, as well as Victor Mature and Gilbert Roland, who had been in the 1925 film, but none of these plans came to fruition.
Special effects for the film were rather basic and involved monitor lizards, iguanas and young crocodiles affixed with miniature horns and fins; Allen later stated that though he wanted stop motion models, he could only work with live animals in accordance with the studio's budget.
Irwin Allen used stock footage from this film for episodes of his various TV series, including Land of the Giants, Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and in 1966 he even tried, unsuccessfully, to sell a TV series based on the film.
